Celtic knot with green gem
Geometric · Mixed · Flash
A circular Celtic knot made of interlaced silver, chrome-like bands sits on a solid black circular background. A glossy green domed gem forms the centre of the knot. The knotwork is symmetrical with crisp, even linework and smooth shading that gives the bands a metallic look.

Dear Tom, the thaw hasn't come and the lower field is still a sheet of grey glass. Dad went down with the ewes at first light and came back with frost in his eyebrows, saying the beck had frozen right to the stones. I told him you'd have had your boot through it by now, the way you put your boot through everything that was supposed to last.

I've been at Gran's things all week because the solicitor wants the cottage empty by Lady Day. Most of it went to the church sale. The silver knot plate I kept back, the round one that hung on the scullery door for as long as either of us can remember. Its bands are so tangled that I spent an hour with metal polish tracing one strand from the top to the bottom, and it came back round to where it started, as if it had been waiting for me. The green glass in the middle is still bright. She always said it was the only thing in the house that never needed mending.
Last night, clearing out the coal scuttle, I found a loose panel in its back. Folded inside was a scrap of paper in her hand that said only: for Tom, when he comes home in the cold. I don't know what she meant, and I suspect she didn't either. Dad says it was a joke. I've decided it's a summons.
I've put the plate on the kitchen windowsill, facing the lane. Come up before the snow sets in properly, and the light off the glass will find you before you reach the gate. Your loving sister, Nell.
