Interlaced spiral emblem in a circle

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical design of two interlocking spiral loops with curled tails extending left and right, set inside a bold black ring with a thin outer circle. The linework is solid and uniform, with black and white areas defining the shapes and no shading or grey tones. The composition is centred and balanced, with the emblem filling the circle.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are fourteen the summer the magistrates bring the broken lock from the granary at Kish-nar and set it on your master's bench like a dead bird. Ennu tells you nothing about it. He only lays a slate in front of you and says, draw the knot until your hand stops shaking. You draw two loops that chase each other's tails, then curl the ends outward like fern fronds, then curl them again until the lines crowd. Forty times. Your fingers ache, and by dusk the slate is grey with dust and sweat.

On the forty-first attempt the loops close without a gap. Ennu studies it for a long time, then takes a bronze stylus and cuts the same pattern into a disc of hard stone no wider than your palm. He works the spirals inward one fine groove at a time, and when he finishes, the disc is black where the lines were hollowed and white where he left the ground. "Everything pulled in must come out again on the other side," he says, "so the stone must be exact, or it will pull you."

The night the granary is opened again, you carry the disc in a leather pouch to the threshold. The wind off the canal is cold and smells of wet reed. A guard with a torch asks what you are carrying. You do not answer. You press the stone to the wet clay of the door and feel the spirals take hold of the warmth in your palm, the two loops tightening, the tails reaching for the wall on either side.

When you lift it away, the clay holds the mark perfectly: a black ring with a white heart. Ennu was right. The seal is exact, and so is the thing it keeps shut. Somewhere behind the door, something turns once, slowly, the way a sleeper turns when the lamp is nearly out, and then it is still.
