Chainsaw and blood splatter with Groovy lettering

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red and grey chainsaw with black outlines moves to the left, trailing red blood droplets from its blade. The word GROOVY sits beneath it in bold black block lettering. The flat colour fills and heavy outlines are set against the skin in a simple, centred composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dennis swore the saw had a mind of its own, which was rubbish, because the saw had no mind at all, only a stiff pull cord and a chain that wanted to be somewhere else. We were clearing the Ashworth elm on the far side of the reservoir when he gave the cord one tug too many and the whole thing leapt out of his hands like a dog off a lead.

It went straight for the hedge, then swung round and took a neat bite out of the fence post. Dennis, flat on his back in the nettles, watched it go past with the calm he only ever has when something is already ruined. A spatter of red flew off the blade in the sunlight. Ketchup, I told him later, from the sandwich bag he had stuffed in his coat pocket. He did not find that funny.

Mrs Ashworth came down the lane in her dressing gown, took one look at the saw sitting on her lawn like a sulking red tractor, and said only, groovy, in the voice she used for the weather. Dennis never forgave her for it, nor for the bill that followed, and he spent that winter telling anyone who would listen that the saw had started it.

Years later he still says the elm came down exactly where it was meant to, and that nobody got hurt, which is more than can be said for the fence post.
