Chandelier and roses across a upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo

A chandelier with candles, drips and hanging pearls fills the centre of the upper back, with a pink rose above and a second pink rose below it. The linework is fine and the shading is soft and grey, with purple and pink tones on the ribbons and petals. The image is taken from behind, with a large dark purple rose in the hair and a blurred crowd in the background.

Mrs Adair had the chandelier rehung three times before the lease ran out, and each time the electrician said the chain would not take the weight of all those drops. She had bought it from a bankrupt hotel in Harrogate for the price of a second-hand car, and she would not let the auctioneer cut the pearl strands off and sell them by the yard.

The ballroom above Mercer's bakery had never had proper wiring, so on Saturdays she lit the candles herself, one cream stick at a time, standing on a step ladder with a box of matches tucked in her cardigan pocket. Couples climbed the narrow stairs for their dances and wedding breakfasts, and at the end of every night she took a pink rose from each table and pressed it between the pages of the guest book, so that by spring the book would no longer close.

The landlord sold the building in March. On the last Saturday she kept the candles burning until the bakers below began their five o'clock kneading, and then she and her nephew Dennis took the whole thing down, one crystal at a time, wrapping every pearl drop in tissue paper as if it were a christening gown. Dennis wanted to leave the frame behind. She told him to mind his hands.

Now it hangs above her kitchen table in a flat over the chemist, too low for the ceiling and too wide for the room. Most nights she lights only the centre candle and sits under it with the guest book open, and the pearls turn slowly on their threads, throwing small moons across the wallpaper until she is ready for bed.
