Back of a woman's neck and upper back showing a pink and purple botanical flower tattoo with buds and green leaves, in a soft watercolour style.

Pink watercolour flower on the neck and upper back

Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo

A large pink and purple flower with layered, translucent petals and a pale centre sits at the base of the neck, with two small buds and green leaves trailing down towards the shoulder. The shading uses soft gradients and loose edges, giving a painterly, watercolour effect. Colour ink dominates the design, and the figure is shown from behind against a plain light background.

Dear Tom,

The poppy by the net loft finally opened on Tuesday, the morning the Gannet came in with the mackerel boats shouting over each other. I was out with the paint box before Mother had the kettle on. Father says I've used up the last of the rose madder on petals no one will ever buy, but he came and stood behind me anyway, the way he does when he thinks I can't hear him breathing.

He wanted the bloom wet and loose, so I dropped the colour in and let it run where it liked. Violet bled into the crimson at the edges, and where the water pooled the paper went pale as the inside of a shell. You'd have laughed. I nearly ruined the centre twice, then found the stamens by accident, a dab of ochre and a flick from the tip of the brush, and it looked like something alive that had decided to stay put.

Mrs Penhallow from the chandlery saw it propped on the windowsill and asked if I'd paint one for her sister's wedding card. I said yes, but only if I could trail the leaves down the stem to the harbour wall. I've left two buds closed at the bottom of the page. Keep them for when you're home. They'll open when the boat's tied up, I'm sure of it, and then you can tell me which colour you'd have chosen.

Love, Nell
