Realistic clown villain portrait on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large portrait of a pale-faced character with smeared dark eyes, purple lips and wild swept-back hair, wearing a dark blue jacket turned over the shoulder. The face and hair are shaded in soft greys and whites with smooth blending, while the background is washed in teal and blue. Orange and yellow speckles spray from the lower left, adding movement and warm contrast to the cool tones.

Dear Tomas,

The lorry gave up outside Ashgrove Flats at two in the morning, which is how I ended up watching Dad paint a clown's face on the side of a fuel tanker with a sable brush and a tin of primer he'd swindled off a shipyard man. You'll not believe it, but it's finished. Pale as a boiled egg, hair thrown back as if he's just been shouting into a gale, and a smear of violet for a mouth that makes the rest of the highway look polite.

Mrs Okonedo at the petrol station said he looked like someone who'd kept his own counsel for thirty years and was about to stop. Dad said that was the nicest thing anyone had said about a painting since 1987. I said nothing, because the blue jacket was the part I couldn't stop looking at. He'd turned it over one shoulder like a man leaving a room he'd finished with, and the grit coming off the verge was catching the light, so the whole right side of the picture seemed to be burning gold.

We had a bet, Dad and me. He said the sparks were cheap grit off the road and I said it was the heat rising off the tarmac, and we both got it wrong. When the sun dropped behind the mesa, the speckles on the tank began to glow as if someone had struck matches inside the paint. A lorry driver pulled over to photograph it and didn't ask for a lift.

I'm sending the tin back with you. Don't let Dad near the solvent.

Love, Nell
