The snow had come over the Col early, and by the time the last walker stumbled through the refuge door you had already counted the bottles twice. Four of Rioja, one of cider, and a flask of pear brandy that Marguerite swore tasted of nail varnish and was therefore medicinal. Nobody had asked you to haul a tin of ginger biscuits up from the valley, but you had, and now it sat on the bench beside the stove like a small, stubborn offering.

Marguerite had been kept awake all night by a cough. Priya, who ran mapping for the regional rescue group, had her boots steaming by the fire and the chart spread across her knees. Teodora, the youngest, had come over the pass from the far side with a sprained wrist strapped in a tea towel, and she was the one who pulled the cork out with her teeth.

"To the road being open in the morning," she said.

"To the road," said Marguerite, "and to whoever left that gate unlatched in August." The wind rearranged the snow on the sill in long pale sentences. Somewhere in the rafters a clock that had no business still running struck nine.

Then Priya said the forecast had turned, and the road would stay shut until April, and nobody spoke for a while. Teodora lifted her mug with her good hand and said what they were all thinking: "Cheers, bitches." Marguerite laughed until the cough took her, and Priya wrote the words on the back of the map in careful capitals and underlined them twice. By noon the next day the pass was white to the sky, and the only legible thing left in the whole valley was that scrawl on the chart.
