A small tattoo of a key with an open heart-shaped bow sits on the inner wrist, with a letter k near the base of the shaft. A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dance hall at Fennick Mill had one door that never opened, and the old caretaker kept its key on a loop of red thread round her neck. Nobody in the village could say who had locked it. The boards behind it were said to still hold the shape of a waltz that nobody had finished.

Jonah Pell played fiddle for the Saturday dances in the hall beside the mill race, and every week he looked at that door and felt the tune in his fingers pull towards it. He asked Maud for the key at the end of a long summer. She laughed at him and said the key only turned for someone who had promised to come back. He said he had made such a promise once, to a girl called Keziah who had gone down the valley road with a bundle and no goodbye. Maud looked at him for a long while, then lifted the thread over her head.

He had filed a new bow for the key himself, shaping it into a heart and cutting a small K into the shaft, so that anyone who saw it would know whose it was. The lock gave with a sound like a held breath. Inside, the air smelled of cold ash and rosin. On the floor, pale in the lamplight, a single line of chalk footprints ran from the door to the middle of the room and stopped.

Jonah tuned his fiddle and played the waltz from the beginning. At the last bar the footprints scuffed, as if someone had turned once and laughed. He set the key on the sill, left the door standing open, and walked home through the wet grass. By morning the key was gone, and the hall was full of dancers he did not know, all of them keeping time to a fiddle no one could find.
