The lorry had been waved through at Hollin Bridge for nine years, so when Dev pulled it into bay four with its hazard lights blinking, I knew before I reached the cab that something was wrong. A grey tabby sat on his dashboard, upright and neat, like a passenger who had paid for the seat. Her paws were tucked under her chest, and she watched me with the patience of someone who had been kept waiting far too long.

She stayed hidden until the fourth stop, when she climbed onto his knee and placed one paw on the steering wheel as if she meant to take over. He had rung the vet in Dover twice and got a recorded message both times. I told him the paperwork would be a bigger problem than the cat, and he said that was exactly what he was afraid of.

In the box marked owner's name I wrote nothing, and Dev asked me what I was doing. I said I was waiting for her to tell me. She looked at me, then at the window, where the lamps had caught the dew on the glass.

When the stamp came down, she stepped off the cab step onto the tarmac as though she had always been ours to lend, and walked straight toward the terminal doors with her tail held high.
