Cherries and blackberries on the ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of two red cherries and three dark purple blackberries hangs from a branch with dark green leaves. The linework is clean and the fruit is shaded with soft gradients and fine stippling, while the leaves use darker green tones. The design sits in the centre of the frame against plain pale skin, with the arm across the upper left of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pardoe had counted the jars twice before she let me carry the basket down to the harbour wall, and by then the blackberries had already started to weep through the paper bag. "Eat none of them," she said, "or the jam won't set." I promised, and meant it, until the path bent round the chapel and the brambles came right down to the sea.

Those hedges belong to nobody in Porthlanow, which is the only argument anyone there ever wins. I picked until my fingers were stained the colour of ink, and then I found the cherry tree behind the old coastguard hut, planted by someone who had clearly given up on England. Two cherries hung from a single stalk, dark red and split at the cheek, and I pulled them free and held them up to the light like a child with a coin.

Mrs Pardoe was waiting on the step when I got back, arms folded. She looked at the basket, then at my purple hands, then at the cherries. "Those," she said, "are for the lodger in the attic room. He's been coughing since Easter and says nothing tastes of anything."

I took them up three flights of stairs. He was sitting on the sill with a pencil behind his ear, drawing the gulls over the harbour. He took one cherry, bit it, and laughed, and then he sketched the whole stalk on the back of a letter, blackberries and all, and pinned it above the washstand where the morning light would catch it first.
