Poppies and arrows on the upper chest
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
Two pink poppies with green centres sit on the upper chest, crossed by two arrows with pale teal shafts and red feathered fletching. The petals are rendered with soft, watercolour-like shading and fading edges, and the arrows have crisp linework. The image is in colour, with the pinks, greens, and reds set against pale skin, and the design is placed diagonally across the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the fire only warms the side it's built on. No, not the one about the drowned bridge. This one is about the cousins of Hollin Vale, Teodor Brask and Wenna Ash, who could not agree about the weather, let alone who had the steadier hand. When the harvest fair came round they were set to shoot at the same straw man, and half the valley turned out to watch them quarrel with bows.

Teodor loosed first. His arrow sang across the stubble and took the poppies growing wild along the field wall, pink ones and paler ones, and the petals came down like the first soft snow nobody had asked for. The crowd groaned. Wenna did not look at the straw man at all. She looked at the broken flowers and said, quite plainly, 'You have shot the bees' dinner.' Then she set her arrow down in the mud beside his, so the two shafts lay crossed like folk who have stopped arguing for the moment.
The judges wanted a winner, so they measured. Teodor's shaft had flown further. Wenna's had gone nowhere at all, which made the judges scratch their heads and fetch the ale. Nobody could say who had won, so nobody was paid, and the cousins walked home together carrying each other's arrows because neither trusted the other to carry their own.
The next spring the poppies came back up through the cracks in the wall, pink at the petals and green at the heart, and folk swore they had sprouted from the feathers. Teodor says that is nonsense. Wenna says it is a fine thing to believe. The straw man still stands in the fair field, and nobody has hit it since, and nobody has tried very hard.
