Cherries and swallow on both ankles
Traditional · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two tattoos sit on a pair of ankles, one above the other: a pair of red cherries joined by a dark outline with green leaves and stem on the upper ankle, and a swallow in flight with grey shading and bold outlines on the lower ankle. The cherries use solid colour fills while the swallow is rendered in black and grey tones. The ankles rest on weathered wooden decking, with white canvas trainers framing the composition.

The swallow came down through the ventilation shaft on the second shift of the dark, when Oda Marr was still picking mould from the last cherry tree in Harrow Dome. It landed on the rail beside her boot and folded its grey wings the way the old maps said birds did, as if it had been told to. Nobody had seen a bird in forty winters. Oda had only seen them pressed flat in the archive books.

Round its leg was a strip of copper wire, and rolled into the wire a square of paper no bigger than a thumbnail. The writing was small and careful. It said that the orchard at Caul Station had lost its grafts to frost, and that whoever still kept red fruit should send cuttings down the line before the next long night. Oda read it twice and put it in her apron. She cut two shoots from the leeward side of the tree, wrapped them in wet moss, and tied them with thread from her own spool. The swallow watched every knot.
When she stood to go, the bird lifted off the rail and circled over her head, then dropped to the hatch and waited. It did this three times. On the fourth, she understood it was not leading her anywhere. It wanted the hatch open, and she opened it. Outside, in the crack between two ration crates, a cherry stone had split in the cold and pushed up a single pale leaf toward the lamp.
Oda knelt in the frost and looked at the leaf for a long time. The swallow settled on her shoulder, light as a thought, and she did not shake it off. Behind her the dome lamps hummed. Ahead, the dark ran on for three hundred miles of rail, and somewhere along it the bird had already counted the stations, and so had she.
