Two colour pineapple tattoos with black outlines and green leafy crowns, one on each ankle, shown beside red canvas trainers and brown sandals.

Twin pineapple tattoos on both ankles

Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo

Two matching pineapple tattoos sit on the outer ankles of a pair of legs, each with a dark outline, yellow-gold scale pattern and green spiky leaves. The fill is flat and solid with little visible shading, and the pineapple on the left leg is angled upwards while the one on the right leans slightly towards the foot. The photograph is taken from above, with red canvas trainers, brown sandals and a dark grey floor filling the rest of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Gran kept a carved pineapple on the gatepost of the guesthouse in Scarborough, and her rule was that it was only ever lit when there was a bed free. Every other sign on the front was grey with salt, but not that one. Bea repainted it gold each spring with a tin of enamel from the hardware shop on Eastborough. I thought it was vanity until I learned that sea captains once carved pineapples on their gateposts to show a traveller was welcome.

The summer Gran's hip gave out, the pineapple stayed dark for nine weeks. Bea and I ran the place between us, though we disagreed about everything: the boiler, the mackerel-coloured wallpaper in room four, and whether Mr Ashdown in the back attic was a retired spy or just a man who hated stairs. We had our ankles inked the week the lease came through, two little pineapples in the same green and gold, mostly to annoy each other with matching things.

On the last night of August a van pulled up in the rain with a couple who had been turned away from three hotels. The husband held a map of the wrong coast. Bea, who had been sulking for a week, went straight out in her slippers, took the soaking suitcase from him and said the pineapple was lit for a reason. I hadn't noticed she had changed the bulb that afternoon. I put the kettle on and said nothing, and when she came back inside she was laughing, and so was I.
