Infinity symbol tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare ankle and foot in a black flat shoe rest on a beige carpet, with a small black tattoo on the inner ankle. The tattoo is an infinity symbol with a tiny separate mark below it, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The image uses one colour of ink, and the tattoo sits in the centre-left of the frame against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tower captain wanted a touch that would never come round again, and for three winters he chased one. Ernest Lusk had the figures worked out on the back of a tithe receipt: five bells, one hundred and twenty changes, every row written in pencil so we could check it against the church clock. We rang it on Sunday evenings after evensong, when the congregation had gone home and the stone held the sound longer.

I was given the treble because my hands were the steadiest, and I learned to watch the rope rather than the ceiling. Ernest stood behind us with his watch open on his palm, saying nothing, only nodding when a row landed clean. Each figure bent back into the last like a loop of wire, so the whole pattern looked like a number lying on its side, a sign that kept going.

The autumn the sixth bell cracked, Ernest chalked a small dot under the last change we had managed, so we would know where we had stopped. Nobody could say whether the peal had been completed or only abandoned. He moved to Skegness that winter and left the pencil sheets in the vestry drawer.

Last week I found them while looking for the hymn books. The chalk dot was still there beneath the final row, and beside it in his neat hand he had written: that is the place we begin. I rang the treble alone on Sunday, and the tower gave back exactly what we had given it.
