Small dreamcatcher tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small dreamcatcher with a circular woven web and two dangling feathers, drawn in black ink. The linework is clean and the web is filled with fine radiating lines, with soft shading on the feathers. The photograph is taken at ankle height against a pale wall with a wooden floor, and the tattoo is the only colour-dense detail in an otherwise muted, warm-toned frame.

Dear Nell,

The gull that flew into the gallery glass this morning is still in the bucket by the stove, and I haven't had the heart to put it over the side. Mr Tennant says I should, that the sea is owed nothing it hasn't taken. He is probably right. He is also snoring like a foghorn in the back room, which is the only reason I can write at all.
I have not slept properly since the October gales. Every time I shut my eyes the beam goes round behind my lids, and I count the flashes the way Mother used to count sheep for Father. Last night I gave up and climbed the iron stair with a candle, and in the lantern room I found the old net the keeper before Tennant hung on a nail by the door. Cord wound round a hoop of driftwood, a rough circle of threads, and two grey feathers tied on at the bottom, though one had gone brittle and I think it was a herring gull's. Nobody had touched it in years. The salt had soaked into it so thoroughly it was nearly white.
I sat under it with the lamp turning, and I watched the light pass through the web. It threw a hundred small shadows across the ceiling, a little net of its own, and I found I could follow the threads with my eyes until they blurred and I simply stopped. I slept until the bell for the morning watch, the first full night since the storm.
So I've taken the feathers down and sewn a second hoop for you, Nell. It is in the parcel with this letter. Hang it in the window at Hastings, where the sun comes early, and tell me if you dream of anything worth keeping.
Your loving brother, Tom
