Aquarius symbol tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot in a blue canvas shoe, showing a small black tattoo of the Aquarius zodiac symbol, two stacked wavy lines, on the ankle. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink sits in the centre of the frame against pale skin. The photo has a teal, faded filter and the background is a dark ribbed grey surface.

Mind the cup, it's cracked at the lip but it holds. There, you've the knack of it now. My father never drank the cut water himself, not once in forty years on this stretch, though he'd carry it up from the standpipe by the top lock in two wooden pails on a yoke, for any boat that asked and a good few that didn't. He chalked a mark on the beam of the lower gate each time he did it. Two wavy lines, one stacked over the other, like the sea had been folded and left on a shelf.

The winter I remember, the cut froze solid from Skipton to the wharf and nothing moved, not even the ducks. Mrs Pickersgill up the hill had a babby in the house and a well gone dry, and she sent her lad down to the lock with a jug and a face like a wet week. My father went up that hill with his pails three times before the light went. The ice cracked under his boots at the bottom step and he swore like a docker, then laughed at himself, which was rarer.
On the last trip he stopped at the top of the lane, set the pails down and looked at the frozen cut below him, grey and still as a slate. He said the water was only waiting to be asked. Then he tipped the first pail over the frost and watched the ripples go out in two lines, one above the other, until the ice took them and held them and let them go again in spring.
