Cherry blossom branch across a foot
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A thin dark branch with small pink blossoms runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot, starting near the ankle and ending past the middle of the foot. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with the blossoms filled in soft pink and red. The foot rests on green grass in daylight, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The cook on the coaster Hesper kept a cutting of cherry in a tin bucket beside the galley stove. Nobody aboard knew where he had got it, only that it had come with him from a port none of them could name. Each spring, when the wind backed round to the east, the buds opened on the sill above the flour sacks, and the crew took it as a sign the coast would be kind to them.

One March the Hesper lay windbound off the Lizard with a hold full of slate and the cook gone grey with fever. The mate, a man called Dunstan Vey, said a dying cook was bad luck and a flowering branch was worse, and he ordered the bucket carried up on deck to be tipped over the rail. The boy who carried it, Eli Trewin, was twelve and did as he was told, but he stopped at the rail and watched the branch lie on the grey water, its petals already loosening.
The wind came round at midnight. By dawn the Hesper was in the lee of Penzance, and the cook, who had lain silent for three days, sat up in his bunk and asked for his bucket. Eli had to tell him. The cook said nothing for a long while. Then he asked for broth, and he ate it, and that was the end of the fever.
Eli went down to the quay at low tide and found a single twig caught in the weed between the steps, three buds still shut tight. He carried it up in both hands, the way you would carry a lamp, and he never told the mate.
