Peacock and lotus ankle tattoo
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a peacock with a stylised tail of swirls and teardrop shapes, paired with lotus flowers and curling vines. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black fills and no shading. The design wraps around the ankle and onto the top of the foot against a pale stone background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The bolt of silk came through the Sarvan crossing folded inside a wedding trunk, and Dilnoza Rahim swore on her mother's grave that every bird on it was a pattern and nothing more. I had been a customs clerk for nineteen years and had heard that oath about everything from cumin to clockwork. I unrolled three metres under the strip light anyway.

The birds were worked in black thread on cream, their tails breaking into swirls and teardrops, as if someone had dropped ink into water and then thought better of it. Between them ran lotus heads on curling vines, each bud closed a little tighter than the one before. The cloth was beautiful, and to my eye it was also a list of things that should not travel in a trunk: a bird with its neck turned back to look at the road behind it, a vine that doubled on itself and kept going.
I wrote TEXTILE, DECORATIVE on the form and then sat with the pen above the box for a long time. Dilnoza waited without speaking, which was the cleverest thing anyone did that whole shift. Beyond the barrier a lorry ground its gears and pulled away towards the hills.
In the end I stamped it through. I told myself a lotus was only a flower and a peacock only a bird, and that a man who meant to smuggle would not choose a design so easy to count. Years later I saw the same swirls printed on a tin of tea in a shop window, and felt the weight of that stamp in my hand again, cold and heavy, as if I had let something cross that I should have kept.
