The orchard master has finally let me onto the east terrace, though only because the old cherry on the wall split in the frost and somebody had to saw it back to living wood. I was the one who knew which limb to keep. Twelve years of climbing that wall as a boy, and I still know where the sap runs.

We grafted the surviving branch onto rootstock brought down from the Marrow Hills, and it has taken. By the first warm week it was crowded with buds, bright as sparks on dark wood. The steward wants blossom ready for the Queen's visit on Lantern Night, so I have been out at dawn with my knife and twine, coaxing the new shoots along the trellis like a man teaching a child to walk.

Here is the strange part. Every morning there are more petals on the cobbles than the tree could possibly have shed, and they all lie pointing the same way, toward the sea gate. Tomas swears the old gardener's ghost is sweeping them. I think the tree is only practising its leaving.

Come home before the frost, if you can, and bring the good scissors. I will show you the branch, and you can tell me whether I have lost my wits or the tree has found its own.
