Black rose and leaf tattoo on a leg
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bare leg is raised towards the top of the frame, showing a large tattoo of two roses with trailing leaves and stems. The roses are rendered in black and grey with bold outlines, soft shading and detailed petal folds. A dark fabric band crosses the leg through the design, with dark clothing at the left edge and a bare foot at the lower right on a light background.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for another hour, and I am not telling this to the cold. You want to know about the two roses on the wall at the bottom of Hollin Lane, where the trees give up and the village starts. Black as a rook's wing they were, the old folk said, though roses are never black, not really. It was the frost that did it, and the soot from the forge, and the stubbornness of Nan Agnes, who would not let her husband pull them out.

Agnes had planted them the spring the bridge washed away. One rose for the boy who went over the water to fetch the doctor, and one for the doctor who never came back across. She trained the stems up through the old hazel and tied the leaves back with string, and every morning she walked out with a pair of shears and a bucket of cold water and talked to them like neighbours who owed her money.
Then came the winter the river froze to glass. The village went hungry, the sheep went into the wood, and the roses went wild. Their stems ran the length of the hedge, out past the stile, and wrapped the gatepost like a ribbon round a parcel nobody wanted to open. Folk said you could not cut them without hearing a sound like a bell, and that the petals folded in on themselves after dark, the way a letter does when it has been read too often.
In spring Agnes was gone, and the roses were still there, heavier than ever. Nobody pulled them out. The children learned to climb them instead, the bridge was rebuilt on the far side of the wood, and the boy's name was carved on a stone beside the lane. Go and see, if you're passing. Mind the thorns. They still know whose hands planted them.
