Cherry blossom on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo

A single cherry blossom flower with five petals and fine dark stamens is tattooed on the back of a hand near the wrist. The petals use soft pink and red washes with delicate black linework for the outlines and stamens. The flower sits off-centre on the skin, with a grey background and a knitted sleeve visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cherry tree at the edge of Tallow Field had been dropping petals since the dodgems went up, and by the Thursday the grass beneath it looked like spilt milk. Nell swept them off the ticket hut step with a yard brush, the way her mother had swept the same step in four other towns, and every few minutes a gust came off the river and sent fresh handfuls spinning back at her.

Her uncle Ray ran the coconut shy and had opinions about trees. He said a cherry in bloom meant bad weather before the fair left, and that blossom only lasted three days, so you shouldn't waste your life on it. Nell didn't argue. That week she had found a leather ledger from the 1970s wedged in the generator box, its pages full of wage sums and ride names, and tucked inside the back cover a single flower pressed flat, faded to the colour of weak tea.

She took it out to the tree on Friday morning, before the gates opened. The petals there were still soft. She picked a fallen flower from the wet grass, laid it against the ledger's margin and drew round it in pencil: five petals, a dot where the stamens would go. She could not have said why she wanted to keep the thing that was leaving.

When the wagons pulled out that evening, she slid the ledger back into its place under the generator box, the old flower still pressed between its pages beside her fresh drawing. Ray watched her from the cab of the lorry and said nothing about the weather. Somewhere past the services the next girl to find it would be turning those pages, and in the next town there would be another tree coming into bloom.
