Constellation tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a constellation of small black dots joined by fine, thin lines, set across the inner forearm. The left panel shows the arm from the side with a grey sleeve pushed up, and the right panel shows the same forearm bent at the elbow against a pale wall. The linework is delicate and the dots vary slightly in size, with the ink appearing crisp and even.

The ledger says the old shape was still above the aft hatch when you signed for the watch, but by the time the third shift wakes the sky has moved on without asking anyone. You pin the chart flat under brass dividers and count the points again, the way your mother counted rivets along the hull, and every time you get the same answer: a scatter of small stars that no longer sit where the old maps put them.

Nobody on Tethra Deck remembers the sky as it was. The children learn the new names from the bulkhead screens, Lantern, Sparrow Gate, the Tooth, and they laugh when you point at the older figures and call them a bent arm or a hunter's belt. Only you still carry the paper. It is soft at the folds and smells of the pencil your father sharpened with a pocketknife, and on its back he wrote the dots he remembered before the hull was sealed, each one with a tiny date beside it in his cramped hand.

Last cycle the relay went quiet for nine days. You spent them at the observation port with a stylus and the paper, joining his dots with fine lines, until the old figure sat on the cold glass like a frost pattern you could almost read. When the relay came back, the navigator leaned over your shoulder and asked what you were drawing. You told her it could not be plotted. She looked anyway, and for a moment you watched her find something in it that was not on any screen.

She traced one line with a fingernail, from the faintest dot toward the brightest, and did not ask again.
