Peacock feather with heart eye on a leg
Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A bare leg rests on a bed with a tall peacock feather tattoo running down the outer side from above the knee towards the ankle. The feather's eye contains a heart shape, and the barbs are drawn in bold black lines with grey shading. The ink is black and grey, and the photo is taken casually in a bedroom with blankets and a laundry basket in the background.

You learn the boat's superstitions before you learn her knots. Maud Tennant, who has mended nets at Skellhaven for forty years, nails a peacock feather above the wheelhouse of the Constance Ruth, eye facing astern, and tells you it watches for weather the glass will not admit to. You laugh, and she does not. Two days later the barometer sinks like a stone and the sky over Scarrow Head goes the colour of wet slate.

The skipper wants to run for shelter. You, the youngest hand, are sent aft to check the warps, and the swell lifts the stern so hard you nearly lose your footing on the deck. Looking up, you see the feather shivering against the grey, its dark eye with the small heart inside catching the last of the light. You remember Maud saying a heart in the eye means someone ashore is keeping a lamp lit. So you stop thinking about the nets and start thinking about the lamp on the harbour wall, which you can just make out between sheets of rain.
The Constance Ruth comes in at dusk with her rail scraped bare and one man's wrist bound in a strip of sailcloth, but everyone comes in. On the quay Maud is waiting with a paraffin lantern, its glass sooted black on one side. She does not ask how the trip went. She only looks up at the wheelhouse, sees the feather still whole, and nods, as if a bet has been settled in her favour.
