Cherub, skull and rosary realism tattoo on a limb
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cherub with folded hands and wings sits above a skull that overlaps a woman's face, and two hands hold a black rosary with a cross below. The piece uses smooth, detailed shading with strong contrast between deep blacks and soft greys. It is shown in two near-identical photographs of the same limb, with a gothic arch shape and purple-toned background visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Gale had said the second-floor room looked over the harbour, which was true, though she had not mentioned the cherub nailed above the wardrobe, its plaster wings gone the colour of weak tea. It was the cheap sort sold outside church fêtes, yet it watched you unpack with a patient, pinched expression, hands folded over its chest as if it were keeping something in.

The wardrobe door had a mirror set into it, freckled at the edges, and on the second night you held a candle up because the electric had gone again. The woman in the glass had a face you half knew from the photographs on the stairs. Behind it, through the silvering, a skull was pressing forward, teeth bared in a smile that belonged to nobody who had ever laughed in this house. You stepped back. The skull did not.
A rosary hung looped over the knob, black beads and a cross worn smooth as a pebble. You lifted it to move it and the beads ran warm through your fingers, as if someone had only just let go. Downstairs the clock struck eleven, and the tide knocked at the harbour wall like a neighbour who wanted a word.
In the morning you asked Mrs Gale about the room. She looked at you over her spectacles for a long time before she said that nobody had slept in it since her sister walked down to the pier with her hands full of beads. You climbed back up with the rosary still in your pocket. The cherub was turned towards the wardrobe now, and its hands were no longer quite folded.
