Black and grey classical sculpture sleeve
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The sleeve shows a winged classical statue on the shoulder and upper arm, with a second sculpted figure with curly hair reaching across the lower section. Foliage and drapery fill the gaps, rendered with soft shading, fine highlights and deep blacks. The tattoo is shown in two photographs, one from the front of the shoulder and one down the outer forearm, and uses only black ink and greys.

The ringmaster wants the plaster woman gone by Saturday, so you are up a stepladder at four in the morning with a tin of grey wash and a dental pick, trying to make her look weathered rather than simply neglected. Harcourt's Grand Continental Circus has been reduced to one lorry, two ponies that will no longer perform and a tuba player who sleeps in the sawdust. The lion went to a sanctuary in March. The statue has stood at the mouth of the big top since the years when the show still had a band worth hearing: a winged goddess, her stone drapery twisting in a wind nobody else can feel, and at her feet a curly-headed boy she seems to lift out of a tangle of carved leaves.

Nobody remembers who bought her. Some say she came out of a bankrupt villa near Lucca, some say a Blackpool pier. What you remember is Tobias, the boy who used to swing from her outstretched hand before he fell in Peterborough and never climbed again. You work the wash into the hollows of his hair one curl at a time, and the highlights come up pale under the lamp, as though someone has breathed on him. The scrap man from Wisbech offered forty pounds for the lot on Tuesday. You told him the goddess was not for sale, and he laughed at you for a sentimental fool.
On Saturday the tent comes down in the rain. You ride on the flatbed beside her with one hand braced against her cold shoulder, and at the level crossing outside Ely the wind catches under her great wing and the whole lorry leans. For a moment she seems to be lifting something, the boy or the lorry or the wreck of the whole show, and you hold on and let her.
