Cheshire Cat grin and quote on thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A serif quotation is set in black lettering across the upper thigh, with a small Cheshire Cat grin and two green eyes below it. The text and the cat's outline use clean black linework with solid black ink, and the green eyes are the only colour. The design sits centred on the skin, with a dark garment at the top of the frame and a red wall behind.

The steward's daughter was sent up to Haddow Keep with bread and a jug of small ale, because the old lord had stopped answering the bell. The walls had been half pulled down by the siege twenty winters back, and the rooms that still had roofs were given over to rooks and damp. She went up the spiral stair with the basket on her hip and counted the steps out loud, as her mother had taught her, so she would know the way down again.

On the landing where the tapestry used to hang, a cat sat on the sill. It was grey as ash, and its eyes were green as bottle glass in the sun. It did not move when she came near. It only grinned, a wide slice of a grin that stayed on after the rest of its face had gone into the dusk, until she could see nothing but the teeth and the thin line of them hanging in the dark.
"You're late with the ale," it said.
She set down the jug. Her knees shook, but she had been raised not to run from a guest. "The lord is dead, then?"
"The lord is in the cellar counting barrels he never filled. The soldiers are in the orchard, believing the gate is still shut. Your mother is at the mill, believing you are safe." The grin widened. "Everyone here believes something, and most of it is nonsense. Only the believing is real."
She thought about this all the way down the stair. Then she told the miller's wife that the castle was empty and the cat would keep the rooks company until spring. Nobody went up after that. The stone stayed standing, and on still nights people said a green light showed on the sill of the high window, just where a grin might be.
