Imperfection is beauty script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a forearm with the words Imperfection is beauty written in a flowing black script. The linework is fine and even, with light shading that gives the letters some depth against the pale skin. The image is black and white, with the arm filling most of the frame and a soft, blurred background at the top.

The crack runs from the lip down to the handle, the one you glued with that gold stuff from the catalogue and then swore you'd never use again. You said it looked like a lightning bolt someone had tried to mend. I said it looked like the mug had been somewhere.

Mr Okafor came in this morning asking whether we could make him a bowl with no flaws at all, because his daughter is marrying in June and he wants everything on the table to be perfect. I told him the truth, which is that every bowl we ever threw had a fault somewhere, a thumbprint in the glaze or a wobble where the wheel slipped. He looked at me as if I had admitted to witchcraft. I gave him the small blue dish with the pinhole in its base instead, and he laughed when I showed him the pinhole, and bought it anyway.

I keep thinking about your hand on the wheel, the way you never once tried to hide a mistake, only folded it into the shape. So I have decided to keep the cracked mug on the shelf above the kettle where the customers can see it. If anyone asks, I will tell them about the woman who could not stop wanting a thing to hold water, and who sent it back to the fire until it did. Come and see it when you're home. The kettle still whistles a little flat, and I have grown fond of that too.
