Cheshire Cat in a teacup with rose and key
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A painted design on paper showing the Cheshire Cat grinning from a blue and white teacup, with a pocket watch behind its head and a top hat, key and small teacup above. Below it sit a cupcake labelled Eat Me and a bottle labelled Drink Me, with a red rose, a playing card with a heart and purple pansies around the edges. The bold outlines are filled with blue, red, green and purple colour, with soft shading on the cat and teacup, and the artwork sits on a desk among paint, pencils and brushes.

The pocket watch had stopped at twenty past four, the hour Ada's father used to come up the lane with his lamp swinging, and she had not wound it since the funeral. Now the colliery office had written to say the lamp room was closing for good, and the tin of effects had to be signed for by Friday. Under a folded cap she found a brass key on a loop of string and her mother's blue and white teacup, still with its saucer.

She set the cup on the kitchen table and poured from the brown pot, and the tea came out the colour of wet slate. Her brother Tom came in with coal dust in the creases of his neck and sat without taking his boots off. "They've got the cat down at the pit-head," he said. "Stuffed grey thing that sat on the sill for thirty years, grinning at men who came in late. Foreman wants it burned." Ada looked at the cup, where the saucer's painted roses had gone faint under the steam.
She wound the watch, which took three stiff turns, and the hands jumped to ten to five. The key fitted the padlock on the lamp cabinet at the top of the lane, where nothing had been lit since the seam flooded. Inside, the lamps hung in rows like fruit that had been told not to ripen. On the glass of the nearest one a crescent of light opened, then the rest of the cat came round the shelf, tail curling after it, teeth first and eyes like two blue saucers.
"You're late," it said. Tom laughed, a bit too loudly, and set down the cupcake she had baked from the last of the sugar ration. The cat looked at the cake, then at the cup, then at Ada. She poured the tea. The grin settled into the bottom of the china and stayed there, shining, while behind them the watch began to tick.
