Mrs Ada Penhale had kept the tin of buttons on the windowsill since the spring her husband went to the mill, and nobody in Thornbury Row had ever seen her hurry. So when young Peggy Dunn came up the lane with a torn christening gown folded over her arm, Ada pulled out the chair, tipped the thimble from its dish and said, "Sit. We'll not be rushed by a bit of lace."

The gown had split along a seam that someone had stitched badly years before. Ada unpicked it with the small silver scissors while the kettle ticked on the range, talking about nothing: the price of coal, a heifer that had got into Dawson's turnips, the purple clematis gone wild over the back wall. Peggy kept glancing at the clock. Ada kept threading her needle with teal cotton from a spool that was nearly empty, and she did not once look up.
When the seam was closed and pressed flat under a damp cloth, Ada held the gown to the light from the window. A neat row of pale stitches ran along the hem, so small they looked like dots of frost. "There," she said. "Nobody will ever find where it was broken. That's the whole trade, love."
Peggy paid in coins she had counted twice on the walk over. Ada wrapped the gown in brown paper, set the thimble back in its dish beside the tin of buttons, and reached for the next thing in the basket.
