A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Walter Pyle had thatched Hallows Farm for forty years, and in all that time he had never once let a row run level. 'Water doesn't care what you meant,' he said, pressing a fresh bundle of wheat reed into the eaves with the heel of his hand. 'It finds the gap and goes in. So every course points up to the ridge, like arrows that have changed their minds.'

His granddaughter Jo, sixteen and sulky about the cold, held the twine and counted courses under her breath. The ridge was a straight length of hazel pegged along the top, the only line on the roof that did not bend. Walter called it the spine. Every chevron of reed on the south slope climbed towards it, and by the third week the whole roof looked like a feather laid open on a table.

The rain came in October, driving sideways, the kind that rattles the glass in the scullery. Jo lay awake listening for drips and heard none. In the morning Walter took her up the ladder, unhooked the rope from the chimney stack, and made her run her palm along the reed the wrong way. It bristled and held. 'Against the grain it lifts,' he said. 'With it, it lies down.'

Years later, in a city flat with no thatch anywhere, Jo still folded her shirts so the seams ran towards the collar, the way the reed had run towards the spine, and she could not have said who had taught her that.
