Chevron linework across forearm and hand
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bare hand and forearm are held out against a pale wall, with a black tattoo of stacked chevron lines that resemble a feather or leaf. The linework is crisp and uniform, with the chevrons narrowing and angling as they run from the forearm toward the fingertips. The image is monochrome, with the dark ink contrasting against the skin and a plain, low-key background.

You arrive at Gullwater House in March, when the guest book is mostly empty and Mrs Ashdown counts the spoons twice before she hands over a key. The house smells of wet coats and vinegar. From your window you can see the sea laying down its pattern on the sand, ridge after ridge, each one a little shorter than the last as the tide draws back.

Her nephew Tobias mends boats in the harbour and talks about nothing but those ridges. He says the wind makes them, that the water folds over itself like a pleated sleeve and leaves a small arrowhead at every fold, all pointing home to the land. You doubt him until you walk the strand at dawn with a notebook and count forty-one of them between the groyne and the wrack line, each one narrowing as it runs down toward the water.
On the last morning you sit in the breakfast room and copy the ridges in ink, pressing hard so the lines stay crisp and even. Mrs Ashdown sees the page over your shoulder and says her late husband drew the very same thing on the back of every bill he ever paid, and never once explained why. She tears a fresh sheet from her pad, lays it beside yours, and smooths it flat with her thumb.
The train leaves at noon. Somewhere past the cutting you open the notebook and find the drawing has smudged where your fingers kept holding it, but the arrowheads still point the way you came.
