Dotwork circle and gradient bands on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and hand are shown against a black background, with the arm extended palm up. The tattoo is a large open circle with a spiral inside, followed by a series of vertical bands that move from dense black dots at the wrist to sparse dots near the elbow. The work is entirely black and grey, and the stippled shading creates a smooth gradient across the arm.

Sit yourself down on that bench, love, the 4.10 is never on time and you may as well hear it while you wait. My uncle Dermot kept the signal box at Hollin Cross the winter the line went single track. Every night at ten he walked out to the tunnel mouth with a paraffin lamp and a tin of whitewash, and he painted a ring on the brickwork, wide as a cartwheel, with a spiral curled tight in the middle like a snail shell someone had pressed flat.

Then he went on painting. Outward from the ring the bricks went grey, then pale grey, then a grey so thin it was almost milk, and those lines ran down the tunnel wall toward the platform in bands. Nearest the rails they were black as a coal cellar. Dermot said the dark wanted somewhere to go round, the way water goes round a stone, and that a man who gave it a pattern to follow would never be walked into by it.
Our Brenda from the goods yard followed him out one night, nosing into his business, and asked what the spiral was for. He told her to watch the lamp. Put your finger on the centre, he said, and go round slow, and the eye goes in and comes back out the same way it went in. Lost things do the same. She tried it, then came back up the cutting stone-faced and said nothing for a week.
The lamp is out now and the wall has gone soft with soot, but you can still see the ring if you know where to look. Mind the yellow line, the train's coming. And if you ever find yourself down there with the lights gone, love, don't go straight. Go round.
