Two solid black bands on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a forearm with two parallel solid black bands wrapping around the arm, angled slightly diagonally. The ink is fully saturated with clean edges and no visible shading or linework within the bands. The plain light background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo and the skin texture.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the years after the great silence, when the rivers ran the colour of stewed tea and nobody left in Hollin Reach could read a map, the ferrywoman Brannagh Oss kept two black bands inked around her forearm, a thumb's width apart. Her mother had put them there with soot and a bone needle, and told her that one band was a promise made to the water, and two meant the promise had been made twice.

Every spring someone came down the bank with a tin coin and asked to be taken across to the far side, where the old towers still stood on their stilts of rust. Some had lost a child to the flood. Some had lost a brother to the brick kilns upriver. Brannagh took the tin, set her oar, and rowed. She never asked what they carried. The river did not care for cargo, only for the rope she threw and the stroke she kept.

One autumn a stranger came with no coin at all, only a strip of cloth as black as a rook's wing. Brannagh asked what it cost. The stranger said the towers had been pulled down for their iron, that the people had gone upriver and forgotten the road back, and that somebody had to go and tell them the water was going down.

Brannagh rowed them over. On the far stones she tore a length from her own hem, bound the black cloth over it, and knotted it tight at the wrist. It sat a little below her two bands, a third promise made to the water. The river took the sound of the oar and gave nothing back, and she turned for home with one more band than she had come with.
