Dotwork circle and gradient bands on forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm and hand are photographed against a black background, with a large circular motif near the elbow. Bands of dotted stippling run across the forearm and grow darker from left to right, ending in solid black near the wrist. The black and grey tones and the even, minimal composition make the design the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Ashdown never let me touch the eclipse plate until I could prick a dot the width of a pinhead, so I spent that whole winter in the back room of his Halifax shop, stippling copper with a steel point while the gas fire ticked. The sun was to be a perfect disc, dense at the rim and left bare at the centre, and the shadow would cross the county in bands, lighter where it only grazed and darker where it fell full.

On the morning of the eclipse the sky over the Calder valley went the colour of pewter and then of ink. Everyone in the street had gone up to the moor with smoked glass and tin bowls of water. I stayed below with a proof pulled from the plate, holding it to the window and counting dots against the light. The bands looked like the hillsides darkening one after another, and when the last rim of sun went out, the room was so quiet I could hear the clock on the landing.

Ashdown came back at noon with mud to his knees and studied the proof without a word. Then he took the point from my hand, turned the plate over, and said the final band could never be dotted, because nothing dotted could hold the dark that came when the light was truly gone. He handed me the burnisher. I smoothed the last band until it shone flat and black, and we both stood there looking at it, the whole sun gone out of the picture.
