Chi Rho within a radiating sunburst

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A Chi Rho monogram, a P crossed by an X, sits at the centre of a ring of radiating black lines. The lines vary in length and weight, with scattered dots at the outer edge that thin out into the skin. The ink is black only, photographed on a forearm against dark textured fabric in dim lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The window was meant for the chapel at Scarth Head, and the lead had come late from Newcastle, so Tobias Crane worked at his bench by lamplight with the shutters open to the harbour. The vicar wanted a plain cross. The widow who paid for it wanted her husband's cobble boat set in the corner. Tobias drew neither. He drew the monogram instead, the P with its bent tail crossed through by the X, and then he drew the light.

He scored the rays himself, one by one, with a diamond wheel, and snapped each line free so that some ran long and some stopped short, the way the sun breaks up when cloud is thinning over water. Where the strokes met the outer ring he let the cut crumble into dots, a spray of tiny chips that a careless man would have swept into the bin. His apprentice, a red-cheeked boy called Ned who ate pasties over the sink, asked why he was wasting good glass on fidgets. Tobias said the dots were where the light gave up.

The first gale of winter came the night before the glazing was finished. In the morning a fishing smack lay broken on the rocks below the chapel, and the lamp in the vestry had burnt out. Tobias walked up the hill with the panel wrapped in sacking under his arm. When the sun cleared the headland and came through the new glass, the rays fell across the flagstones in long bars, and the dots scattered over the widow's hands where she knelt by the font, as if someone had flicked a brush of gold across the stone.
