A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had been falling on Hollin Cross since Tuesday, and by Thursday the lane to the inn had vanished under it. Nell Parrish counted the flour sacks in the larder twice, then a third time, because counting gave her hands something to do while the kettle muttered on the range. The guests were three commercial travellers and a surveyor who had stopped reading the road map and started reading the ceiling. Nobody was going anywhere.

The bird came to the scullery window on the Friday morning, a chickadee with a black cap pulled down low like a man who did not care to be spoken to. It hopped along the sill, tapped the glass, and left. Nell thought nothing of it until it came back, and then again, always at the same hour, while the bread proved. She started crumbing the last of the suet onto the frost-furred ledge. Her father had grown morning glory up the scullery trellis every summer, great purple trumpets that opened at dawn and folded by noon. Last August he had gone out to the coal shed and not come back in until the blooms were already shut, and the seed tin had sat unopened on the shelf since.

On Saturday the snow stopped. The chickadee was waiting on the sill when she unbolted the door, fluffed to twice its size. Nell prised the lid off the tin, shook a few dark seeds into her palm, and pressed them into the empty pot by the step. Then she broke the crust of a fresh loaf, set the larger piece on the ledge, and watched the bird take the first crumb and fly off over the white hedges, leaving the seed to the thaw.
