Chickadee perched on a branch
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small songbird with a black cap and pale cheek perches on a thin bare branch. The head and wing feathers are rendered in black and grey with fine feather detail, while the chest and belly are shaded in soft peach and pink. The bird fills most of the frame, with a pale blue-grey wash behind it and the branch running diagonally down the right side.

In the last cold month before the thaw, the river at Ashvale froze so hard that the millers' boys walked across it to fetch salt from the far bank. Nobody else in the valley would go out. The swallows had gone south with the warm air, the geese had gone with them, and the grain store was down to its bottom sack.

A widow named Hesse lived alone at the edge of the birch wood with one goat and a loom that had stopped in autumn. Each morning she broke the ice on the water trough, and each morning a small grey-capped bird sat on the bare alder by her gate and scolded her. It was the only thing in the wood that had not left, so she began saving the crusts from her bread for it.
The bird took them from her fingers in the end, light as a dropped leaf, and she told it the old stories while it ate: about the sea that once froze to the bottom, about the king who drank the sun. The bird listened with its head tipped to one side, the way a neighbour listens when they have heard the tale before.
When the first green came up through the snow, the bird was gone, and the alder held only a single pale feather caught in a twig. Hesse wove it into the last length of cloth on her loom. Some said the cloth was blessed. Hesse said it was only warm, and that a thing which stays through the worst weather has earned a share of your bread.
