Owl and flowers on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large realistic owl with detailed grey and brown feather texture and dark eyes fills the upper arm and shoulder. Pink and coral flowers with green leaves wrap around the owl on the right side, with a soft green wash behind the bird. The shading is smooth and layered, and the colours are bright against the mostly neutral tones of the owl.

The owl would not go into the crate until somebody brought him flowers. Dad said it was nonsense, the sort of thing Nan used to say, but Ivy had been feeding him off the back of the waltzer all summer and he had never once looked at anything the way he looked at the pink willowherb growing in the ditch behind the generator. So I climbed the bank in my slippers while the lorries idled in the lane, pulled up a fistful, and held it out at the height of his chest. He considered it with his head on one side, then stepped onto my wrist as if I had been expected.

We had been on the road since April, moving from Lincoln to Boston to a village green near Spalding where the cricket club let us park under the oaks. Every town had its own smell of frying onions and diesel, and every evening Ivy sat in the caravan doorway with the owl on her shoulder, reading cards aloud to anyone who paid a pound. She told them the same thing each time: that a traveller is only ever lost if she forgets the way home. Nobody believed her, but people came back for the owl.

On the last night the wind came up off the fens and the big wheel groaned like a ship at anchor. Ivy didn't come out to take the money. When I went into the caravan, the owl was on the brass rail of her bed with his feathers puffed against the cold, and the willowherb I'd picked had been tucked into the band of her hat. She had gone quietly, the way a lamp goes out when the oil is finished.

I drove the crate out to the Fenland lanes at dawn with the owl ticking inside it. At the first crossroads he called once from the dark, and I pulled onto the verge and opened the lid. He lifted out over the hedge with pink petals still caught in his feathers, and I stood in the wet grass until the sky turned the colour of his eyes.
