Gremlins-style creature on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A realistic tattoo of a small furry creature with large ears, big brown eyes and a wide-eyed expression, resembling the Gizmo character from Gremlins. The fur is shaded in dark brown and black with lighter cream and grey tones on the body, and the hands and feet are rendered with soft pink skin tones. The creature is centred on a lower leg, with denim visible at the top edge of the frame.

Eddie Lusk found the creature on the Thursday the fair pulled into Dunmere Green, tucked in a wooden crate behind the coconut shies while the showman was busy shouting at a cart horse. It had ears as wide as teapot lids and eyes the colour of strong tea, and it looked up at him as though he owed it money. He had meant to take it straight to the police house, but it grabbed his jumper sleeve with both hands and would not let go, so he smuggled it home under his coat and into the coal shed.

By Saturday it had eaten a jar of pickled onions, a packet of Bird's custard powder eaten dry, and the sandwiches his mother had wrapped for his dinner. It learned to whistle the pips from the wireless and could open the shed bolt with one small grey thumb. Mrs Lusk found her good stockings in the coal scuttle, chewed into lace, and asked Eddie whether the Harcourt boys had been up to their nonsense again. Eddie said nothing. He had been sleeping in his coat.
On Sunday evening the fair began to pack up. Showman Oddie's wagon idled at the bottom of Church Lane with its lamps lit and its canvas flapping in the rain. Eddie carried the crate down in both arms, the creature's damp fur smelling of paraffin and toffee, and set it on the tailboard. Then he had to peel its fingers from his sleeve one at a time, and it watched him the whole while with an expression of enormous betrayal.
The wagon rattled off towards the Kettering road. Eddie walked home with a cold wet cuff and a lightness in his chest he could not account for. At the kitchen window that night, while his mother was rinsing the cups, he saw a pair of ears pressed against the glass and a small face peering in, and the tin of Ovaltine on the windowsill was already empty.
