Lighthouse in a floral wreath on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A lighthouse stands beside a small cottage on a shoreline, with rays radiating behind the tower and stylised clouds above. The sea is shown with bold wave lines and areas of stippled dotwork, enclosed in a scalloped oval frame. A leafy wreath and a large five-petal flower sit along the lower edge, all in solid black ink and grey shading.

The lamp was already burning when Ada Pring came down the shingle with the basket on her arm, which was odd, because nobody had lit it. The boy from the lighthouse board had gone back on the Tuesday boat with a chest cough and a story about the gallery stairs, and the cottage had stood dark since. She found the door unlatched, the wicks trimmed and the brass of the lantern room polished until it threw the sunburst back onto the clouds.

Her husband Tom had kept the light for twenty-two years and never once let the sea come up past the third course of stone. He used to say the water was patient and the rock was not, and that a light was only a promise made to a boat, and promises had to be kept in the dark as well as the day. Ada climbed the iron ladder with the basket knocking her hip. At the top the glass was clean. Someone had written in the log in a careful hand: Wind south-west, fair. Light lit at dusk. Mrs P. to take the watch.
She had never lit a lamp in her life. She sat on the stool beside the oil store and waited for the sea to change its mind about her, and it did not. Out past the reef a fishing smack was heading in with its sail half down, steering by the one thing on that coast that never moved. Ada watched it come until the stars showed over the saltmarsh and the wicks answered her, one after another, as if they had only been waiting for someone to ask.
At first light she wrote her own line beneath his: Watch kept. Boat home. Then she went down the stairs to put the kettle on.
