Nobody touched a melon until she'd thumped it twice with her knuckle and listened for the hollow.

The summer of the flood, the Pinnock boy stole the big ochre one off the wall and carried it behind the shed to eat in private. He sat on an upturned bucket and cut himself a wedge so generous it nearly reached the middle. Then he looked up and there was nobody to share it with, only the wall and the rain coming over the hedge. Gran found him there at dusk. She didn't scold him. She sat down on the step, took out her own knife, and cut one sliver from the very rim, the thinnest thing you ever saw, and laid it on the step beside her like a coin on a saucer.

"Eat that," she said. "That's all the melon you need tonight. The rest of it was never yours to hold on to by yourself."

He laughed, and then he didn't, because the flesh was sweet right through and the rain had stopped. Gran carried the rest of the melon indoors and never mentioned it again, though the Pinnock boy always brought her the first fruit from his own wall after that.
