A circular geometric emblem with an inner triangle sits above four lines of block lettering reading THE SUIT AND I ARE ONE. The lettering mixes bold and light sans-serif weights, and the emblem uses clean, even linework. The ink is solid black on pale skin, shown from behind with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The boat from Orkney had not come up the Pentland Firth in nine winters, so when a grey hull appeared in the mist with a woman standing in its bow, the harbour women dropped their nets and walked down to the slip. Her name was Ysolde Marr, she said, and she had come to light the lamp on Stroma. Nobody believed the lamp still worked. Old Tam Gunn walked her up the shingle anyway, and on the way she told him that her grandmother had built the suit from a drowned mining drone and a sack of salvaged wire. The suit had asked her one question the first morning she wore it. It asked what she wanted it to carry. She said, anything heavy, because she was tired of her own back doing it. The suit said, then I will be your back, and that was the bargain they kept.

The tower stair had two hundred and six steps. Tam counted them because counting was what he had. Ysolde took the lamp's brass housing on her shoulders, a load that had broken three men before, and climbed without stopping. At the top the ring at her collarbone flared white, and the old wick caught with a sound like a breath let out after a long dive.

Tam stood in the doorway with his cap in his hands. The light swept out over the Firth, and he saw two shadows go up the lamp-room wall together, one woman and one thing that had never once been tired, and they stayed close as the beam turned.
