The harbour at Skerrow has been rearranged again while I was out, and Dad would have sworn at it. The new breakwater goes out in arms, each one turning into the next, so a boat coming in on a grey morning has to feel its way through like a rat in a cheese. Kenny Pryde lost a whole week of creels to it and swears the council did it on purpose to keep the boats from getting home early for the pub.

We were out eleven days on the Mary Ann and the sea was a wall the whole time. Once the trawl snagged on something that turned out to be an old anchor chain wrapped round a lost pot, and Skipper cut it free with a hacksaw while we bobbed about cursing. All that time I kept thinking of the drawing you did for me when you were nine, the spiral with the dot in the middle, and how you told me that was where the minotaur lived. You said you'd never once got in or out without a crayon mark to follow.

Coming in last night the fog sat on the water so thick I could not see the bow. There was only the light on the end of the inner wall, turning slow, and I suppose that's the dot, the one thing out there that never moves. I steered for it and counted the arms the way you taught me, left, then right, then left again, and we came through at half three with nothing but the hull knocking against the fenders.

I'm sending you the last of my wages for the boiler. Tell Mam I'll be ashore Thursday and I'll fix the gutter properly this time, not with string.
