Circle with coloured lines behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo sits behind an ear, showing a thin black outline circle with two short angled lines, one blue and one red, and a tiny black dash between them. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink colour is limited to the small blue and red accents against mostly black. The circle fills the centre of the frame, with the ear and hairline visible at the edges.

Dear Tom,

The lock at Hartwell has been sticking since the thaw, so we sat three hours below the weir with the kettle on and nothing to do but look at the gauge on the wheelhouse wall. You'll remember it, the round brass face Dad bolted up the year before he went. The needle never moves for me. Mr Okafor at the keeper's cottage says it's ice in the works, and that might be right, but I think the glass has cracked behind the dial and I'm too proud to say so to a man who has never once asked me to haul a line.
Anyway, the blue mark and the red mark on the face are the two levels we're meant to keep between. Blue for the water coming down off the moor, red for the height we can't pass without the banks going. Between them sits a single black stroke that Dad never explained. I asked him once. He said it was the level he meant to be at, and then he laughed the way he did when he had made a joke he didn't want you to get.
We're through on Thursday if the sluice opens. I'll bring the barge round to Ashby and we can talk properly, with the stove going and your boots off. Bring the cheese from the market, not the rubbery stuff.
Your sister, Nell
