Two overlapping circles in fine line
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a small tattoo of two thin black outline circles overlapping slightly, sitting on smooth skin. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill inside the circles. The image is black and white, with a soft, blurred white background and a knitted white fabric edge at the bottom of the frame.

The compass point slipped twice before Tomas got the arc to close, and by then the lime was already going off under my thumb. Master Holloway had made us both kneel on the chapel floor at Harrowgate and draw the two circles side by side on a board first, each one with its centre on the other's edge. The lens they shared in the middle, he said, was where an arch wanted to spring from, because the eye knew it before the mind could measure it.

We cut the window head that autumn and the scribed marks stayed on the jamb beneath it, two pale rings crossing like a pair of hands that had been taught to hold each other. Tomas went south to the railway works and I stayed on to see the roof slated, then the roof came off in a winter storm and nobody bothered to put it back. The keep became a place for jackdaws and sheep.
I walked up there again last June. Ivy had taken the stair and the chapel floor was a bed of nettles, but the jamb was still standing. Rain and years had worn the outer lines soft and grey, so the rings looked like something breathed onto the stone. The lens in the middle was still sharp, though. Water sat in it after the morning shower, a small bright oval, and I understood why it had held. It was the one place on the whole stone where two different hands had pressed at once, and nothing had ever wanted to smooth it away.
