Circuit board and feather on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the back of a lower leg and shows a circuit board pattern of green and red traces, dots and rings on a solid black ground. A dark feather shape with green and red accents sweeps diagonally across the lower part of the design. The ink is mainly black with bright green and red lines, and the photo is taken outdoors against a dark wall and a brick pavement.

The relay box at Salt Wells had been dead for three days when you finally drove out, the pickup's tyres spitting grit across the washboard road. The notice board at the depot said only that the line to Calder Ridge had gone quiet and someone had to walk the boards. You took the spare fuses, a torch, and the flask your mother filled each morning, though she had stopped speaking to you about anything but the weather.

The shelter door was propped open with a stone. Inside, the green traces on the control board ran in tidy lines, solder bright as new coins, and every red-ringed node was dark. Something had nested in the fan housing: a long black feather, dusty at the tip, wedged across two terminals. You eased it free with two fingers. It was warm from the sun through the slats, and when you laid it against the board a thin line of current flickered on, as if the feather had been holding the circuit open all along.
You sat on the step and waited. Out on the flats a dust devil stood up, turned once, and lay down again. You forgot the feather in your hand until the handset crackled, a woman's voice from Calder asking if anyone was there. You said yes, and kept saying it while the sun slid behind the ridge. When you finally stood to leave, the feather was still on the sill where you had set it, its barbs catching the last of the light.
