Two cats, kite and moon on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo on the outer thigh shows two cats, one a realistic grey tabby with green eyes and the other a loose blue watercolour cat, with a crescent moon and a kite in green, orange and pink above. Soft washes, splatter and dripping ink fade into the skin around the cats, while the grey tabby is shaded with fine detail. Colour ink dominates, with black accents for the moon and drips, and the composition is a tall diagonal cluster centred on the leg.

Old Mags Pirrie kept the last roof of Carrow Keep, and on that roof she kept two cats. The grey tabby, Sixpence, would come down for nobody. The blue one had walked up from the ferry one wet March and never answered to a name, only to the hiss of a kite string being wound on a stick. The keep had no lord now, just jackdaws and a well with no bottom.

Each autumn the wind came off the Solway and the village children flew their kites from the curtain wall. One year a green and pink kite snapped its line and went up over the broken tower, trailing string like a loose thread. Sixpence went after it up the ivy. The blue cat took the end in its teeth and walked the battlements, paying out line, until the kite dipped and the crescent moon came down with it, snagged on the tail like a hook of silver.
Mags told the children the moon was only a saucer the blue cat had licked clean, and they believed her because she was old and her hands were blue with cold. Nobody wound the string back. It still hangs from the north wall, grey and fine, and in the mornings the dew settles on it in beads.
Sixpence came down at last. Some evenings you can find her by the well, watching the water for the moon, while the blue cat sits on the wall with its tail wrapped round the line, waiting for the wind to change.
