Circuit board pattern on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a forearm with a tattoo of tracing lines that resemble an electronic circuit board. The lines are dark, stepped and angular, branching and clustering towards the centre of the design and thinning out at the ends. The background is a soft dark gradient with a light glow to the upper right, which keeps the focus on the skin and the ink.

You find the shed door open at two in the morning, the bulb swinging on its flex, and the relay board on the back wall clicking through its sequence like someone counting in their sleep. Your grandmother built that board the year she retired from the telephone exchange, and she never once let anyone else touch it. Now the solenoids chatter and a hose somewhere past the runner beans begins to hiss.

You take the torch and follow the copper runs out of the shed, along the path, under the rhubarb leaves and through the gap in the fence where the allotments meet the railway cutting. Every bend is a square corner, exactly as she insisted, because a curve, she used to say, was only a corner that had not made up its mind. The lines fan out through the soil, and the watering starts and stops in an order you cannot yet read.
At the far end, beneath the old Bramley, the last pipe ends in a bed you have never seen her plant. Forget-me-nots grow thick as a rug, with a brass tag wired to a stake at the corner. Inside the shed lid, taped to the underside, is a card in her hand: a row of numbers and one line that says you switch it on when you are ready to stop keeping the garden for her.
You kneel in the wet grass, press your palm flat to the cold soil, and wait for the next click. The board goes quiet, the railway lamp hums on the embankment, and somewhere under your hand the water keeps moving along the lines she drew for you.
