Circular emblem tattoo behind the ear

Other · Mixed · Photo

A side view of a head shows a circular tattoo behind the ear, on the area where the hair meets the scalp. The design has a black filled background with red figures or shapes set inside a thin circular border. The image is dark overall, with the ear lit from the front and the rest of the frame in shadow.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The black disc hung on a nail inside the chapel porch for as long as anyone in Thornmere could remember, and nobody was allowed to take it down, not even the vicar when the roof leaked onto it in the wet winter of '47.

Old Mrs Gillow told the children it had been cut from a ship's wheel that went down off the Scar with nine men aboard. The red marks were their blood, she said, and when the three curls came round to meet the centre, the men would find their way home. Ada Pryce did not believe a word of it. She was twelve and sharp-eyed, and she had counted those red shapes so often she could draw them with her eyes shut: three curling tails swinging back from a single mark, like fish turning in a tide.

The winter her brother failed to come off the boat, Ada took the disc down with a kitchen knife and carried it to the shingle. She sat there until the tide turned and the red curls caught the last of the light, then she laid it face down on the stones so the sea could read the back.

Her brother came in at first light with a split oar and a story about fog lifting in a clean ring over the Scar, just where the water had been pulling him. The disc went back on its nail that Sunday. Mrs Gillow dusted it herself and said nothing, but she hung it with the red marks turned towards the door.
