Crossed-out phone symbol behind ear
Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a red circle with a diagonal slash, enclosing a black mobile phone and three signal arcs, sits on the skin behind the ear. The linework is bold and even, with solid black fill for the phone and a clean red outline. The image is a close side view of the head and neck against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Arthur Penhale had painted every sign in Porthkerris for thirty years, the boat names, the tide tables and the notice about dogs on the quay, so when the harbour master brought him a drawing of a wireless set with a red ring through it, he assumed it was a joke. "Nobody can stop the thing talking," he said, wiping his brush on a rag. "It's the Admiralty's set, not ours."

Mr Gosse wanted it on the door of the signal hut, where Dilys Roach sat with her headphones clamped on, taking messages from trawlers three hundred miles out that wanted to know whether the mackerel were running. Dilys did not care for the sign. She said it would make the skippers think the set was broken, and that a notice forbidding a machine to speak was the most English thing she had ever been asked to look at.
Penhale painted it anyway, with a fine sable and a pot of vermilion he had bought for the lifeboat. He took the circle round slowly until the red was even, filled the set solid black, drew three arcs coming off the top as if the wind had got into it, and laid the slash across. The sign looked so stern that the gulls would not land on the step.
The fleet read it. By the Thursday every boat in the harbour had switched off its set and nobody asked after the mackerel, and when the fog came down on the Saturday there was no one to call. Dilys sat in the hut listening to nothing until dawn, and when the boats came in groping along the wall one by one, Penhale was already on the step with a scraper. He took the red bar off the door, stroke by stroke, and left the three black arcs looking out over the water.
